The European Union is Establishing an Artificial Intelligence Office

The European Union has achieved a global first in the field of artificial intelligence by adopting the “Artificial Intelligence Act.” This law aims to ensure the safety of artificial intelligence systems used in EU countries, along with their compliance with fundamental rights and EU values. The law introduces strict rules for high-risk AI applications and mandates transparent operation of these systems.

The law was adopted after 36 hours of intense negotiations in Brussels. Special regulations will be implemented for high-risk artificial intelligence systems. In addition, sensitive applications such as cognitive behavior manipulation, facial recognition, and biometric classification will be prohibited.

The European Union Commission plans to establish an “Artificial Intelligence Office” within its structure. This office will be responsible for monitoring artificial intelligence models and setting standards. Additionally, heavy fines will be imposed on companies in the event of violations of this law.

Amnesty International has opposed this development, stating that the law contradicts fundamental human rights. The organization emphasizes that this regulation sets a negative precedent in terms of digital surveillance.

This step is seen as a crucial turning point in the face of new conveniences and challenges brought into our lives by the development of artificial intelligence technology.
